Lip Filler

The skin on our lips is particularly vulnerable to sun damage, environmental stressors and the effects of aging.

Over time, our lips experience deflation, loss of volume, and a lack of definition. Whether your lips have succumbed to these factors, or you have naturally thin or uneven lips, lip fillers (like Belotero® and Juvederm®) are injectable treatments used to restore lost volume, redefine lip contours, create symmetry, and reduce and soften lines around the mouth. Lip injections are a lasting, natural-looking solution that provide an instant improvement non-surgically and with very little downtime.

If you’re hoping to revitalize your smile with lip filler, treatments at Skin Science Dermatology in Toronto are quick and comfortable, and always performed by Dr. Geeta Yadav, a highly skilled medical dermatologist with extensive experience and training.

How Lip Filler Works

Lip filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule that is naturally produced by your body. When gently injected into the lips using a small needle, lip filler works to instantly restore lost volume while simultaneously stimulating collagen production for naturally fuller lips. Over time, the substance slowly dissolves and is absorbed by the body.

What does lip filler treat?

Is lip filler safe?

Lip filler is approved by Health Canada and the FDA, and considered very safe when injected by highly trained and experienced practitioners. Potential side effects include mild redness, swelling, tenderness, itching, and bruising at the injection site. The risk of allergic reactions in properly screened patients is low. Patients at Skin Science Dermatology report very little discomfort during treatment. Some fillers contain lidocaine, and additional topical anesthetic is available for added comfort.

How many lip filler treatments are needed?

Desired outcomes may be achieved with just one treatment, though we often recommend approaching lip filler in stages to gradually ease into the natural-looking enhancement you’re looking for; we will work with you to ensure you love the way you look. The results of lip injections can last 6-12 months depending on the rate at which your body metabolizes the filler. The procedure can be repeated as desired to maintain your results.

Is lip filler right for you?

Lip filler is an effective solution for someone looking to safely and effectively add volume to their lips, correct an uneven smile, or soften lines around the mouth.

Recovery & Results

How long does it take to see results from lip injections?

The results of your lip filler treatment will be immediate. It is normal to feel “firmness” at the injection site for a few days after treatment. This area will soften and settle into place over time leaving you with a soft and natural look. Results of your treatment may take up to 14 days to take full effect.

How long is the downtime after lip injections?

There is very little recovery time required for lip filler treatments, and you can return to most day-to-day activities immediately, though we recommend you avoid lying down and performing strenuous exercise. In some cases, you may see some minor swelling and bruising around injection sites following your treatment, which could persist for approximately one week. To minimize these effects after treatment, we recommend applying an ice pack or cold compress to the injection area. Do not rub or massage your lips and do not apply makeup. Avoid facials or saunas, this will help minimize the risk of raising your blood pressure and therefore minimize the risk of temporary bruising.
