Dermal Fillers

As we age, after years of sun exposure, hormonal changes, and other lifestyle factors, our skin loses the plump appearance of youth.

Dermal fillers (like Belotero® and Juvederm®) are injectable treatments used to smooth lines and wrinkles, restore lost volume, hydrate your skin, and enhance and shape facial features. Dermal fillers are a lasting, natural-looking solution that provide an instant improvement non-surgically and with little recovery required.

If you’re hoping to revitalize your appearance with dermal filler, treatments at Skin Science Dermatology in Toronto are quick and comfortable, and always performed by Dr. Geeta Yadav, a highly skilled medical dermatologist with extensive experience and training.

How Dermal Filler Works.

Dermal filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule that is naturally produced by your body. When gently injected into target areas using a small needle, dermal filler works to address common signs of aging, enhance and restore lost volume, and shape facial features. Over time, the substance slowly dissolves and is absorbed by the body.

What do dermal fillers treat?

Is dermal filler safe?

Dermal fillers are approved by Health Canada and the FDA, and considered very safe when injected by highly trained and experienced practitioners. Potential side effects include mild redness, swelling, tenderness, itching and bruising at the injection site. The risk of allergic reaction in properly screened patients is low. Patients at Skin Science Dermatology report very little discomfort during treatment. Some fillers contain lidocaine, and Dr. Yadav will administer additional local anesthetic as necessary for added comfort.

How many dermal filler treatments are needed?

Desired outcomes may be achieved with just one treatment, though we may choose a more gradual approach when appropriate; we will work with you to ensure you love the way you look. The results of your dermal filler treatment can last 6-18 months depending on the treated area and the rate at which your body metabolizes the filler. The procedure can be repeated as desired to maintain your results.

What type of dermal filler do I need?

Dermal fillers are not all the same – they have varying properties that make them particularly suited to certain applications or areas of the face and body. During your consultation, we’ll work with you to determine the best type of filler for you depending on your needs and desired outcomes.

Dermal fillers such as Belotero Volume, Contour, and Shape and Juvéderm Voluma, Vobella, Volift, and Ultra Plus XC are well suited to address the loss of plumpness and sagging skin that naturally occurs as we age. These fillers can be used to enhance the cheeks, lips, temples, tear troughs (under eye hollows) and more.

Juvéderm Volite is a unique skin boosting injectable treatment, used to improve skin hydration, texture, fine lines, and overall glow. Volite can also be used for hand rejuvenation and neck lines.

Radiesse is a calcium-based dermal filler that is particularly well suited for hand rejuvenation; plumping the skin on the backs of the hands to reduce the appearance of visible veins.

Juvéderm Volux is a structural dermal filler, specifically designed to sculpt the jawline and chin for firmer, smoother contours.

Is dermal filler right for you?

Dermal filler is an effective solution for both men and women looking to smooth lines and wrinkles, restore lost volume, refresh their appearance, or enhance their natural features. You may not receive treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Recovery & Results

How long does it take to see results from dermal filler?

The results of your dermal filler treatment will be immediate. It is normal to feel “firmness” at the injection site for a few days after treatment. This area will soften and settle into place over time leaving you with a soft and natural look. Results of your treatment may take up to 14 days to take full effect.

How long is the downtime after dermal filler?

There is very little recovery time required for a dermal filler treatment and you can return to most day-to-day activities immediately, though we recommend you avoid lying down and performing strenuous exercise. In some cases, you may see some minor swelling and bruising around injection sites following your treatment, which could persist for approximately one week. To minimize these effects after treatment, we recommend applying an ice pack or cold compress to the injection area. Do not rub or massage the treated area, and do not apply makeup. Avoid facials or saunas, this will minimize the risk of raising your blood pressure and therefore minimize the risk of temporary bruising.
