Over time, the muscles in our face repeatedly contract and tighten, resulting in lines that make us look aged, tense, and tired.

Neuromodulators – like BOTOX COSMETIC® and Xeomin® – are injectable treatments used to address frown lines, crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and fine lines around the mouth. BOTOX THERAPEUTIC® can also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Botox is a lasting, natural-looking solution that provides an instant improvement non-surgically and with little recovery required.

If you’re looking to safely enhance your appearance without sacrificing the natural expressions in your face, Botox treatments at Skin Science Dermatology in Toronto are quick and comfortable, and always performed by Dr. Geeta Yadav, a highly skilled medical dermatologist with extensive experience and training.

How Botox® Works

Botox is a purified protein that is injected into target areas with a short, fine needle. It works by blocking the nerve signals to certain muscles, preventing them from contracting and thus preventing wrinkles from developing or worsening. These treatments are intended to enhance your look, not change it; you’ll still be able to smile, frown and be expressive. Treatments for excessive sweating work similarly, and involve a series of small injections in order to block the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering the sweating response in the treatment area.

What does BOTOX treat?

Is BOTOX safe?

Botox and other neuromodulators are approved by Health Canada and the FDA, and considered very safe when injected by highly trained and experienced practitioners. Potential side effects include bruising, itching and pain at the injection site. The risk of allergic reaction in properly screened patients is low.

Patients at Skin Science Dermatology report very little discomfort during treatment. Dr. Yadav will administer a local anesthetic as necessary for added comfort.

How many BOTOX treatments are needed?

Desired outcomes are usually achieved with just one treatment, though after a first time treatment, we recommend a two-week follow up visit which may include additional injections to achieve the ideal level of correction. The results of your Botox treatment can last three to four months, at which point the effects of the treatment will gradually disappear until the treated area regains movement. The procedure can be repeated as desired to maintain your results.

The results of a hyperhidrosis treatment can last six to nine months, with approximately 35% of patients achieving a reduction of excessive sweating for over one year.

Is BOTOX right for you?

Botox is an effective solution for both men and women looking to soften unwanted lines and wrinkles or treat excessive sweating. You should not receive this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a known neurological disease.

Recovery & Results

How long does it take to see results from BOTOX?

Weakening of the injected muscles begins as soon as 24 hours after your Botox treatment, and lines may continue to fade for up to one week. When treating hyperhidrosis, a reduction in sweating may begin as soon as the first day, with the full effect taking up to two weeks after the injections. If the desired effect is not achieved, additional treatment may be required.

How long is the downtime after BOTOX?

There is very little recovery time required for Botox treatments, and you can return to most day-to-day activities immediately, though we recommend you avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area, excessive bending down, tiring physical exercise or hot tub use on the day of treatment. In some cases, you may see some minor bruising, itching and pain at the injection site, which should resolve within one to two days.
