Broadband Light (BBL)

Using non-invasive pulses of light energy, BBL is a safe and effective solution for brown spots, blood vessels, rosacea and even acne.

The most powerful Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device on the market, BroadBand Light (BBL™) by Sciton® works to safely treat skin conditions associated with aging and sun damage, including brown spots, redness, and pigment irregularities.

At Skin Science Dermatology in Toronto, our qualified medical aesthetician can perform BBL treatments to enhance the health and beauty of skin on the face and body non-surgically and without extended downtime.

How BBL™ Works

BroadBand Light treatments use short blasts of high-intensity light to gently heat the upper layers of your skin to treat sun damage, vascular issues, pigment irregularities, and acne. The heat is absorbed by targeted areas and stimulates skin cells to regenerate new collagen, eliminates fine vessels that cause redness, and reduces the unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions. In the days following treatment, the body works to eliminate damaged cells – age spots darken and slough away while blood vessels are absorbed and metabolized by the body, revealing youthful, vibrant, and healthy skin.

What does BBL treat?

Is BBL safe?

BBL treatment is extremely safe when performed by a highly trained and experienced practitioner. Most patients at Skin Science Dermatology describe a sensation similar to the snapping of a rubber band during the treatment, though it is normally well-tolerated. Integrated cooling is used throughout to minimize discomfort and increase patient safety.

How many BBL treatments are needed?

Results may be noticeable after just one BBL treatment, though a series of treatments performed every two to four weeks may be recommended for optimal results, depending on the condition and area being treated. Over time, as underlying and newly-accrued damage emerges, repeat treatments may be recommended to maintain your new baseline.

Is BBL right for you?

BBL treatment is an effective solution for men and women who want to treat sun damage, vascular issues, and pigment irregularities non-surgically and without extended downtime. BBL cannot be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of photosensitizing disorders, or if you tend to develop hypertrophic scarring or keloids.

Recovery & Results

How long does it take to see results from BBL?

Over a period of four to seven days following your BBL treatment, the skin is renewed, revealing a more even and luminous complexion.

How long is the downtime after BBL?

Following treatment, most patients feel as though their skin is sunburnt, which can last for two to twenty-four hours. Redness, swelling and itching or a hive-like appearance is also normal, and usually subsides within a few hours; a cool compress may provide comfort. You should be able to return to most day-to-day activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding make-up, shaving, using any face cleanser, and hot or cold water (use tepid water) for 24 hours post-treatment. In the week following treatment, you should strictly avoid sun exposure, as well as the use of scented lotions or soaps, exfoliant creams, acne creams or gels, loofah sponges and aggressive scrubbing. If possible, you should also avoid swimming pools and hot tubs, as well as any activities that could cause excessive perspiration.
