For skin-smoothing effects – look to Tretinoin

Skin care ingredients can be confusing.

While it can be easy to fall into the trap of the alluring promises of tight, bright and youthful looking skin, it’s important to know what goes on at the chemical level with the active ingredients that are in your skin care routine.

Whether you are dealing with acne breakouts early on in life or struggling with the effects due to aging, many people turn to Tretinoin for help with these issues and don’t even realize it.

What is Tretinoin you ask? Tretinoin belongs to a class of medications called retinoids – which is one of the most widely researched and proven skincare ingredients available – and is actually the unsung hero of the skin care world.

Retinoids: The fountain of youth

Retinoids are widely hailed as the best cure-all treatment because of all the hard work it does for your skin behind the scenes.

Retinoid is the term used to describe a group of topical compounds that are derived from vitamin A – of which there are three:

  • Adapalene: differin, differin XL
  • Tretinoin: steiva a, retin A micro,  SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0
  • Tazarotene: tazorac

*Also note that this is not the full list of brands.

Now what exactly is Tretinoin?

Think of Tretinoin as floss for your face. It works to open pores, helps turnover the skin, evens the pigment tone and texture.

As a pharmaceutical form of retinoic acid available only by prescription, Tretinoin is a vitamin A based retinoid used to treat acne other skin diseases partly by keeping skin pores clear. Tretinoin is the most used and most studied anti-aging compound on the market.

Retinol converts to retinoic acid and is often considered a more tolerable form of vitamin A.

It can be irritating, so start slow to around 3 times a week and work your way up to daily use. Your skin can peel if it’s too irritating or strong so it’s wise to use medications first and then face cream after if it’s too irritating. SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 is the ideal formulation to combine with retinoids as it restores the skin’s essential lipids, minimizing irritation, peeling and redness while also providing an anti-aging effect .

What are the benefits of using Tretinoin?

While we all love to have sun kissed skin and crave the warmth during the sun depraved winter days, we objectively know that the sun is very harmful and the damaging rays can wreak havoc to the skin.

Sunscreens and antioxidants should always be paired when utilizing retinoids as the skin becomes photosensitive. Antioxidants provide advanced environmental protection and are clinically proven to  treat an array of skin conditions while sunscreen will provide protection from the ultraviolet rays preventing free radical damage.

Retinoids like Tretinoin work to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color. After some time, you will notice that your skin tone will be firmer, skin texture smoother, and your overall complexion will be brighter.

Tretinoin works to treat:

  • Fine wrinkles,
  • Dark spots
  • Rough skin on the face,
  • Acne,
  • Pigmentation,
  • And fading age spots.

How does Tretinoin work?

Tretinoin helps promote cell turnover by lightening the skin, replacing older skin with newer skin, and slows down the way the body removes skin cells that may have been harmed by the sun. It helps to stimulate collagen, which leads to the youthful, clearer-skin and unclogs pores by preventing dead cells from building up.

Tretinoin works best when used within a skin care program and usually takes three to six months of regular use before improvements in wrinkles are apparent—and the best results take six to 12 months and must be used continually to maintain their benefits.

It is not safe to use in pregnancy or lactation – so talk to your doctor before.

5 simple ways to take care of your skin

Having cosmetically perfect skin is a bit of the side-effect of the social climate we live in. The goal isn’t to compare yourself to others, or what you feel you need to live up to, it’s about feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin. To have glowing and healthy complexion doesn’t mean that you need to obsess over it, but rather a few changes to your routine can make all the difference in the world.

Here are our five tested and true tips on how you can have naturally radiant skin.

1. Use Sunscreen

Have you ever heard Baz Luhrmann’s, “Wear Sunscreen” song back in 1999? Besides the countless life lessons that he drops throughout, he says:

“If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.”

It is highly recommended to wear an SPF of at least 30, and be sure to apply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you are sweating or jumping in the pool during the summertime.

2. Avoid harsh weather conditions

As difficult as it is to suggest avoiding the sun (especially living in Canada), the truth is that sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and an increase in the risk of skin cancer. Make sure you’re wearing protective clothing and seek shade throughout the day to block ultraviolet rays, specifically between 10am-4pm, when the sun is at its strongest.

However, protecting your skin from the elements isn’t just likened to warmer temperatures; cold climates can also wreak havoc on your skin. Lengthy exposure to the cold and windburn can pull the moisture from your skin making it dry.

3. Moisturize

This is a perfect segue into our next point, because during winter, your skin is more prone to drying out, so moisturizing in the morning and evening helps lock the moisture in. Use lukewarm water to wash and gently massage your face before moisturizing.

4. Please don’t smoke

We kindly ask this, because not only does smoking make your skin look older, it is a major contributor to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin which ultimately decreases blood flow and makes your skin paler. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin that significantly weakens the strength of your skin.

5. Watch your diet

I would recommend consuming dark, leafy greens and foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, in addition to drinking plenty of water throughout your day to help keep your skin hydrated. This will help minimize dry and flaky skin. Some research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Check your stress: Stress releases cortisol; a hormone which can throw off the other hormones in your body and cause breakouts on your face.

  • Get your eight hours of sleep: We would strongly recommend to get eight hours of sleep and to keep your stress in check. Lack of sleep can contribute to dark circles under your eyes and can lower your complexion’s pH levels.

Keep it simple and follow these five golden rules for healthy and proactive skin care.
